Fall at Parvilla Cycle & Multisport

Fall at Parvilla Cycle & Multisport
We’re into Fall and as many of you would have noticed from this past week that the temperatures are awesome for riding. Racing is done for the year (apart from you 'crosser's) and it's time to get some great social rides in, or even look forward to next season. At Parvilla we have a host of ways to help you achieve all your goals  in 2014....we have a great Fall bike sale going on now, also Computrainer classes start soon and it is always a good time to get properly fit on your bike!

Computrainer Training Sessions
If you have been to the store you will have noticed the Multirider Computrainer training studio
. The Fall Training Session starts the week of October 22nd and the 8-week sessions are available to book online .These classes do sell out so be quick to sign-up.

The Training Center features a custom designed 8 station multi-rider Computrainer system.  Instead of riding a one size fits all spin bike at your local gym, our system requires you to ride YOUR bike producing effective real-life training.

Morning and evening classes will be available Tuesday and Thursday  as well as Wednesday evening.  As winter approaches two classes will also be available on Saturday mornings. Classes begin October 22nd and run for 8 weeks until Christmas (with a break for Thanskgiving).  More details are at the website where you can also sign up.

What were you doing this past weekend?

This past weekend the Parvilla Cycle & Multisport Elite Triathlon Team were busy competing around the US.

Crissy Fuentes, fresh off an age group win at Ironman Mont Tremblant, raced at the Ironman 70.3 World Championships in Las Vegas.  How many people can race a 70.3m Worlds races just three weeks after an Ironman and still call it a training race for the Ironman World Championships on Oct 12th?  Not many.......and she still raced to a 3rd place podium spot!

Crissy Fuentes on her custom Guru CR.901 at Ironman 70.3M Worlds

On a regional level, Allison LaRochelle raced in the Elite Women's field at The Nations Triathlon in Washington D.C.  Forgoing her usual age group win and racing the Elite field for the very first time as she trains for Ironman Florida in November, Allison placed a great 12th overall. Everything points to an awesome first Ironman.

Biggest Bang For Your Buck In Time Trial Equipment

Biggest Bang For Your Buck In Time Trial Equipment

With the Church Creek Time Trial coming up this Saturday August 17th and the Parvilla Time Trial Series approaching on August 28th, many people have been looking at how they can gain those extra seconds out on the road.  Aside from a good structured training program, what else can you do?
The speed you can achieve on your bike is determined by two factors:

1. How much power you can produce

2. Wind resistance.  The faster you go, the more wind drag you need to overcome.

There was an excellent article in Velonews about which aerodynamic equipment benefits most during an individual time trial.  What they didn’t do is rank the cost vs. benefit for each piece of equipment and the associated time savings.  Years ago I saw something like this done by cyclingnews and found it extremely interesting.  Unfortunately it’s buried deep in the internet and is lost forever so Cycling Tips rehashed it for those of you who missed it.

The following chart shows the aerodynamic savings according to what www.aerosportsresearch.com calculated for Velonews.

A couple notes:
- These numbers are calculated for a rider over 40kms at a time of 48minutes.  Faster than most of us could go!

Biggest Bang For Your Buck?

1. Using aerobars that allow you to get into a tuck position will be the cheapest thing you can do for the aerodynamic benefit.  You can get a set of aerobars for $100 and they’ll save you a couple minutes in a 40km TT.

2.  Positioning on the bike is key.  Without the benefit of a good bike fit you will never be able to maintain an aerodynamic position in the aerobars or produce the power to overcome any wind resistance.  You can get a bike fit for $400 from Stu Waring at Parvilla Cycles, he is the only Retul Instructor in the US that does not work out of Retul HQ in Boulder! Not only will it save you minutes in a 40km TT but it will also make your cycling more enjoyable!

3. Getting a skinsuit will provide massive benefits.   The only disclaimer is that the testing shown here was done on a specially designed skinsuit for Nike, not a standard skinsuit.  I’m sure this skinsuit costs in excess of $1000, but you’ll realize large gains with a standard skinsuit as well.    The chart above shows an extreme comparison between this Nike skinsuit and regular jersey/knicks in windtunnel testing.

4. Shoe Covers will cost you no more than $50 and could save you half a minute in 40kms.  Shoe covers smooth turbulent air over the straps and buckles of the shoes.

5. Upgrading from a regular helmet to an aero helmet could save you over a minute for a $200 spend.

6.  Time Trial Wheels are getting into the expensive end of TT equipment spectrum, but they do provide some good time savings and look very PRO.  Having an aero front wheel will make the most significant difference and will cost the least of the two.  Most of you probably already have a set of deep dish aero wheels for racing anyway.  A rear disc wheel is one of the last items you should spend lots of money on if you’re looking for big savings.  However, if you want to look cool this should be the first item on your list  ;-)

The Weekend Recap: July 29th, 2013

Ah, the Dog Days of Summer are here, but it also means that the racing calendar is a busy one and this past weekend was no exception with Parvilla athletes rocking races all over the East Coast.

Ironman Lake Placid 2013

Parvilla had three friends of the store racing in Lake Placid this year, including Paul Olin on his Guru.  All three had great races in what proved to be challenging and ever changing conditions in the mountains of the Adirondacks!  If you haven't seen the course profile for Lake Placid it is certainly one of the toughest Ironman races anywhere in the world and you need to be on top of your game to being welcomed home into the famed skated arena and be called an "Ironman".

Julie Dukes - 12hrs 04mins

Greg Nercessian - 13hrs 33mins

Paul Olin - 11hrs 11mins

Endless Summer 6-hr Run

The Whisman clan of Kevin, Bobbi and Cori ran their first ultra event this Saturday at the locally held Endless Summer 6-hr event.  Competing in the team relay event they ran past the 50km mark and got their first official ultra finish.  The Kilted One (Kevin) may have got the Ultra bug as he is already thinking of racing the event solo next summer!

The Big Blue Train - Annapolis Bicycle Racing Team

ABRT were out in force at the weekend in both the Shenandoah Time Trial and the Miller School road race, which doubled as the Mid Atlantic Championships. Podiums were taken by the handful!

Katy Giles - 1st in the 35+ Road Race and 1st in the Womens 1/2 Time Trial
Sue McQuiston - 1st in the 35+ Time Trial
Amanda Watson - 2nd in the Womens 1/2 Time Trial
Emme Staats - 2nd in the 10-12 girls Road Race
Anna Staats - 1st in the 13-14 girls Road Race
